Youth Awards
UNDER CONSTRUCTION -- CHECK BACK IN LATE JUNE 2012

- Junior Gardeners: Pre-school through 6th grade
- Intermediate Gardeners: 7th through 9th grade
- High School Gardeners: 10th-12th grade. 9th grade in 4-year school
- Youth Club Member: Member of a youth garden club
- Individual: Not a member of a youth garden club. Must be sponsored by an adult club member or adult club.
APPLICATION FORM: Each entry requires a current form, unless otherwise stated under award description. Obtain from the CGCI website or the CGCI Awards Chairman.
BOOK OF EVIDENCE:
- Binder: Use theme or amphile folder (NO 3-RING BINDERS.) Attach envelope to inside back cover for Schedule and Evaluation Forms. Maximum of six (6) sheets, twelve (12 sides), or as specified in award description.
- Use clear protective page covers. Page may be reduced in size, if desired, to permit additional information on same page. Be brief, neat, and concise. No handwritten text. Photographs must be captioned. Sponsoring club newsletter may be used as supporting evidence.
- Label: Affix to front cover with name and number of award, names of youth club and sponsoring club and name of district.
- Application: Place the CGCI Application Form into a plastic sheet protector and use as page 1. Make sure the form is complete!
- Written Report: If required, should tell how the award requirements were fulfilled.
Evaluation Forms: Used by judges to score entry. Use scale of points as a guide for content when making book of evidence. Obtain from the CGCI website or the CGCI Awards Chairman. Evaluation form should be in a #10 envelope attached to the inside back cover.

SMOKEY BEAR / WOODSY OWL POSTER CONTEST
1st $25 and 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th certificates each section.
Submit to Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl Poster Contest Chairman by January 10.
2012-2013 Themes: TO FOLLOW
- Section 1 1st grade
- Section 2 2nd grade
- Section 3 3rd grade
- Section 4 4th grade
- Section 5 5th grade
For poster based on Smokey Bear (fire prevention) or Woodsy Owl (environmental) themes. Required poster size is 11" x 17." May use crayons, markers, poster paints, watercolors, etc. No computer generated graphics. Artist’s name, home address (city, state, zip), telephone number, grade, school and sponsoring garden club (if any) must be printed on the back, lower right corner of poster. No name on front of poster.
YOUTH PENNY PINES AWARD
1st $25 to youth club.
Deadline: January 10. Submit to Youth Awards Chairman.
Award for most Penny Pines plantations purchased.
In plastic page protector, one page description of how funds were collected, how many plantations and one photo (placed on backside of description).
J-1 GARDENING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
1st $50, 2nd $30, 3rd $20, HM. To youth clubs
Deadline: January 10. Submit to Youth Awards Chairman
For a written report from the club counselor, signed by the president of the sponsoring adult club, giving number of meetings, number of children attending and list of club activities and projects in the awards year. Submit photographs and any other supporting evidence.
J-2 CONSERVATION AWARD
1st $45, 2nd $30, 3rd $15, HM $10. To clubs, youth club members or individuals.
Deadline: January 10. Submit to Youth Awards Chairman
For work in any phase of conservation by a youth, such as the study of trees, soil or birds. Submit photographs and any other supporting evidence.
J-3/HS-7 CIVIC BEAUTIFICATION AWARD
1st $50, 2nd $30, 3rd $20. To junior, intermediate or high school youth clubs.
Deadline: January 10. Submit to Youth Awards Chairman
For civic beautification, roadside improvement, cleanup activities or other worthwhile community beautification project. Book of Evidence must include:
- Name of junior or intermediate gardeners’ club
- Name of sponsoring club and district.
- Club data, i.e., number of members, ages, etc.
- Description of project. State whether a continuing project, or finished within the awards year. Identify plant materials used by botanical or common names.
- Before and after photographs; newspaper clippings and any other supporting evidence, if possible.
J-4 ESSAY CONTEST - "How Do Trees Help The Environment"
1st $20, 2nd $15, 3rd $10, 4th $5. To youth club members or individuals in 3rd, 4th, 5th grade.
Deadline: January 10. Submit to Youth Poetry/Essay Contest Chairman, Joyce Reid.
Original essay using one side of an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of paper, 100-200 words. Submit in a pronged binder with application form. Include name, age and address of applicant; name of counselor, sponsor or sponsoring club and district.
J-5 POETRY CONTEST
$10 to first place winners in each grade.
Title: "Colorful Fruits" or "Tasty Vegetables" (choose one)
Eligible for Pacific Region and NGC Awards.
Deadline: December 1
Submit to Youth Poetry/Essay Contest Chairman, Joyce Reid.
Eligibility: Kindergarten through 9th grade.
- All entries must be typed and titled.
- Include name, address, age and school grade of participant on the back of the entry.
- Sponsoring garden club must also be identified.
- All entries become property of National Garden Clubs, Inc
- Poems do not have to rhyme.
- Poems may be traditional verse, acrostics, bland verse, cinquains, diamond poems or Haiku.
J-9 HORTICULTURE AWARD
1st $25 each section. To youth clubs.
Deadline: January 10. Submit to Youth Awards Chairman
- Section A: Grades 1-3
- Section B: Grades 4-6
For work in any phase of horticulture. Submit a written report with photographs as supporting evidence. Secure in a pronged binder with application and evaluation forms.
J-12 FLOWER ARRANGER AWARD
1st $25, 2nd $15. To youth club members or individuals.
Deadline: January 10. Submit to Youth Awards Chairman
To a flower arranger for a floral design made and photographed during the awards year. Entry to be enclosed in a plastic page protector. On application form describe container, accessories, mechanics, background and plant material used.
J-14 YOUTH SCULPTURE CONTEST for 4th through 8th graders.
1st $50, 2nd $25, and first, second, third and honorable mention ribbons.
Deadline: December 1. Submit top Youth Awards Chairman
J-FS YOUTH FLOWER SHOW/SPECIALITY YOUTH FLOWER SHOW AWARD
1st, $25 each section to youth clubs
Deadline: January 10. Submit to Youth Awards Chairman
- Section A: Grades 1-5
- Section B: Any other Youth Club
Book of Evidence to include photos of the setup, the entire show (without people) and one picture of the children involved. A brief description is required. Youth General Rules apply.
HS-1 CONSERVATION AWARD

HS-3 ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD
1st $50. to youth clubs or youth club members

For a comprehensive program in a field of environmental concern. Submit a written report with photographs. Youth General Rules apply.
HS-4 PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD
1st $25, 2nd $15, 3rd $10. To youth club members or individuals

For three (3) photographs composed of any of the following: floral arrangements, horticulture specimens, gardens. Photographs must be taken.
HS-5 FLOWER ARRANGER AWARD
1st $20. To youth club members or individuals

HS-6 ESSAY CONTEST - Title: "The Benefits of Community Gardens"
1st $50 To youth club members or individuals in 9th-12th grades.
Deadline: December 1. Submit to Youth Poetry/Essay Contest Chairman, Joyce Reid.
Winning California entry sent to Pacific Region and NGC for consideration. Length of essay: 500-600 words. The entry will be penalized if the essay does not conform to the required length. All words are to be counted.
- All entries must be typed and titled.
- Written to be suitable for publication in The National Gardener.
- All entries become the property of National Garden Clubs, Inc.
- Manuscript must include: wallet-size photograph, name, address, phone number, name of school, grade, list of activities and sponsoring club.
- Place manuscript in plastic folder.
