January 18, 2012 Waste Management and Environmental Services in Long Beach

Come meet the guru of Waste Management and Environmental Services in Long Beach, Lisa Harris. She has answers to all of your questions on this topic. Did you ever wonder what happens to all that stuff you put in your waste bins, especially the purple one? Why isn’t there a bin for cuttings? Where does our trash go and what happens when it gets there. Wait until you hear her answers! You are in for an exciting morning with Lisa. Her enthusiasm will turn you into an avid environmentalist!

After Lisa’s presentation, Bonnie will be demonstrating ideas for using recycled materials in your garden. Everyone will need to bring a 1 or 2 liter bottle, empty and clean.

February 15, 2012 The Tree People

TreePeople is an environmental nonprofit that unites the power of trees, people and technology to grow a sustainable future for Los Angeles. Simply put, our work is about helping nature heal our cities.

TreePeople’s mission is to inspire, engage and support people to take personal responsibility for the urban environment, making it safe, healthy, fun and sustainable and to share the process as a model for the world. Our early efforts in the 1970s focused on educating and inspiring people to plant and care for trees. Why? Because more trees means cooler temperatures, cleaner air, replenished groundwater supplies and a safer, more beautiful city. Expanding the tree canopy over L.A. remains one of our central goals. But the worsening impacts of global warming and the looming threat of water shortages tell us we need to do more. Come hear what this organization is up to and what you can do to help or become involved. We all need to better our environment.

March 21, 2012 Arbor Day Celebration

We will be planting another tree in the El Dorado Park East. Come and participate in the program and hug a few trees. Wear your spring hats!

You are all invited to a luncheon/tea at the home of Bonnie Goldberg afterwards. Cost will be $10.00/person. Come enjoy the gathering of gardening friends for tea and crumpets!

April 18, 2012 The Long Beach Garden Club Horticulture Show & Luncheon

Come one, come all and bring the best from your gardens to our wonderful horticultural show. Everyone can bring at least one lovely flower, branch or plant to show off. This is a judged show with ribbons! The more who participate the better the show. It’s fun and costs you nothing but a bit of time. There will be a sign up for what to bring for the pot-luck luncheon. During the judging, Bonnie will be showing some photos from the Royal Horticultural Show at Tatton Park this last July. This is a wonderful day. Come and enjoy what our gardens in Long Beach are showing this month.

May 16, 2012 Growing and Using Herbs with “Huggy”

There is such a great emphasis these days regarding the use of herbs in our gardens for decorations and using them in our cooking. Our own Norma “Huggy” Dennis has had lots of experience in this field. As a former “nurseyman”, grower and great cook she will have lots to say. There will be many ideas given, recipes available for everyone and demonstrations. Come and enjoy this special time and learn more about using herbs in your own gardens and cooking.

After her presentation, you will have a chance to make an “herb pot” for your porch so you, too, can pick herbs for your cooking. There will be a charge for this project, which will be announced at the February meeting.

June 20, 2012 LBGC Spring Luncheon

Details of luncheon will be forthcoming. Everyone is to bring a plant to share for the Club Plant Exchange. (Best if you have grown it yourself from a cutting or seed!) Come participate in the fun!
