The Landscape Design Council operates under the auspices of California Garden Clubs, Inc. (CGCI) and National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC). The purpose of the Landscape Design Council is to encourage CGCI to continue the sponsorship of the NGC Landscape Design Schools; provide assistance to the CGCI Landscape Design School Chairman; interest other members in becoming NGC accredited Landscape Design Consultants; and encourage all Consultants to remain active through regular renewal of certificates.
Objectives of the Council are: Increase knowledge by further study and activity. Recognize good landscape design practices in order that members may be better qualified to serve as guardians and consultants of land use and outdoor beauty. Stimulate public interest through example and recognition in phases of community planning. Encourage further study and activity through conducting workshops, providing graphics courses, conducting tours and practicing evaluation of public and private design sites.
The Council supports the NGC and CGCI objectives: Assistance with Landscape Design Schools and optional programs. Promotion of attendance at courses and optional programs. Preparation of educational exhibits for flower shows, CGCI meetings, etc.
Landscape Design Council members have completed the Landscape Design Study School, a series of four ten-hour courses and passed the required examinations, entitling them to become NGC-accredited Landscape Design Consultants. Provisional Consultants (garden club members who have passed two or more courses) are also entitled to join the Council.
Council members act in an advisory capacity to encourage awareness of the need for good landscape architectural practice, serving as guardians of environmental beauty by applying what they have learned to individual and community projects. Council members promote environmental interests through work on community projects, committees and boards.
